1989 Aged Shou Mei 寿眉 White Tea

from 120.00

We had the very rare opportunity to try this 28-year-old white tea in Fuding, home of white tea.  The saying for white tea goes 一年茶 三年藥 七年寶 meaning "one year tea, three years medicine, seven years treasure", and describes the increasing potency, complexity, and value of white tea as it ages.  White tea older than 7 years is hard to find, older than 10 years is rare - this particular batch made it to 28 years after being sold to a Chinese Malaysian buyer in 1992, then to a Taiwanese buyer, before finally being brought back to its origin point of Fuding last year.  Shou Mei is the leafiest grade of white tea, picked latest in the spring, and is most suitable for aging.  This remarkable tea is the finest white tea we've ever tasted by far, with notes of Jamaican pipe tobacco, aged brandy, golden raisins, prune, date, honey, dried cherry, and a distant hint of sandalwood.  The most striking characteristic of it is its qi - simultaneously uplifting and calming, dreamlike, euphoric.  "Felt like an insect in amber" and "My chair lifted at least an inch off the ground" - describing the floating, drifting sensation of this tea.  We're lucky to have access to such a rare gem sourced by Fuding tea farmer and collector Li Yan Mei - at four times the "treasure" age, this extremely mature white tea is the crown of our collection.  A once in a lifetime opportunity.
